From Wikipedia: Nikola Tesla (Serbian Cyrillic: Ðикола ТеÑла; 10 July 1856 – 7 January 1943) was a Serbian American inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, and futurist best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system.
Please, read this free book about Nikola Tesla. American Institute of Electrical Engineers, May 1888. Listen to New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia's Eulogy on Nikola Tesla on January 10, 1943Nikola Tesla was a Serbian American inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, and futurist best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current electricity supply system. Tesla has been called the patron saint of modern electricity and the father of the radio and wireless technology.
Nikola Tesla was born a subject of the Austria in 1856 in a mountainous area of the Balkan Peninsula known as Lika. Nikola Tesla was born around midnight, between July 9 and July 10, 1856 during a fierce lightning storm. According to family legend, midway through the birth, the midwife wrung her hands and declared the lightning a bad omen. This child will be a child of darkness, she said, to which his mother replied: “No. He will be a child of light.â€
His father Milutin, Serbian Orthodox priest, and his mother Djuka, were both Serbian by origin. Tesla's father was a stern but loving Serbian Orthodox priest, who was also a gifted writer and poet.
Milka, Angelina and Marica - Tesla's sisters. Tesla attributed all of his inventive instincts to his mother.
Tesla began his education at home and later attended gymnasium in Carlstadt. An early sign of his genius, he was able to perform integral calculus in his mind, prompting his teachers to think he was cheating.
Tesla enrolled at the Austrian Polytechnic School in Graz on a Military Border scholarship. In his first year, Tesla never missed a lecture, made the highest grades possible and started a Serbian culture club.
Tesla's father, Milutin Tesla, contracts an unspecified illness and dies at age 60. The following day, he was given a "funeral liturgy fit for a saint," and was buried in the Jasikovac cemetery in Divoselo.
Tesla's Uncle Pavle arranges for Tesla to work for Ferenc Puskas at the Budapest Telephone Exchange in Hungary, which was then under construction. When Tesla arrived he worked as a draftsman in the Central Telegraph Office. The Budapest Telephone Exchange became operational and Tesla was assigned the position of Chief Electrician.
Tesla and his good friend Anthony Szigety accepted positions with the Continental Edison Company, which had recently been started in Paris.Tesla worked for Charles Batchelor at the Ivry-sur-Seine lamp factory and installed lighting systems in the Paris Opera House and a theater in Bavaria.
Tesla arrived in New York with four cents in his pocket, a few poems and Charles Batchelor's recommendation letter for Edison. We know that Edison hired Tesla on the spot to work on his D.C system but would hear nothing of Tesla's A.C. power system ideas.
At some point during Tesla's employment, Edison promises to pay him $50,000 if he can improve the performance of Edison's D.C. dynamo. Tesla succeeds beyond Edison's expectations, but he reneges on his promise to pay Tesla. Edison is quoted, "You don't understand our American humor." Deeply hurt, Tesla resigns.
Tesla sells patents for A.C. Polyphase System to George Westinghouse for $25,000 in cash, $50,000 in notes and a royalty of $2.50 per horsepower for each motor. Tesla waived all his future royalties so Westinghouse can stay in A.C. business.
Mark Twain in Tesla's Laboratory at 35 South Fifth Avenue, 1895. Tesla was good friends with Mark Twain, famous American writer.
Tesla:"...Meanwhile, the transmission of energy on an industrial scale is not being neglected. The Canadian Niagara Power Company have offered me a splendid inducement, and next to achieving success for the sake of the art, it will give me the greatest satisfaction to make their concession financially profitable to them."
Tesla:"In this First power plant, which I have been designing for a long time, I propose to distribute 10,000 horsepower under a tension of 10,000,000 volts, which I am now able to produce and handle with safety..."
With high frequencies, Tesla developed some of the first neon and fluorescent illumination. He also took the first x-ray photographs. He experimented with shadowgraphs similar to those that later were to be used by Wilhelm Röntgen when he discovered X-rays in 1895.But these discoveries paled in comparison to his illuminating a vacuum tube wirelessly - having transmitted energy through the air. This was the beginning of Tesla's lifelong obsession - the wireless transmission of energy.
Renowned Serbian-American inventor Nikola Tesla created one of the world's first wireless remote controls, which he unveiled at Madison Square Garden in New York City in 1898. He called his fledgling system, which could be used to control a range of mechanical contraptions, a "teleautomaton." For his demonstration, Tesla employed a miniature boat controlled by radio waves. The boat had a small metal antenna that could receive exactly one radio frequency.
Tesla filed for radio patents in 1897 in the United States. Marconi attempted to file for patents in 1900 but received a denial because of Tesla's existing patents. But Marconi's radio company began to experience financial success and support from important members of the American industrial community, like Thomas Edison and Andrew Carnegie. In 1904, the U.S. patent office granted Marconi a patent for the invention of radio. U.S. Supreme Court decided in Tesla's favor when they finally heard the case in 1943.
From an historical standpoint, it is significant that the genius Nikola Tesla envisaged a world wide communication system using a huge spark gap transmitter located in Colorado Springs in 1899. A few years later he built a large facility in Long Island that he hoped would transmit signals to the Cornish coast of England. In addition, he proposed to use a modified version of the system to distribute power to all points of the globe.
Tesla: “But we shall not satisfy ourselves simply with improving steam and explosive engines or inventing new batteries; we have something much better to work for, a greater task to fulfill. We have to evolve means for obtaining energy from stores which are forever inexhaustible, to perfect methods which do not imply consumption and waste of any material whatever.â€
Tesla: “Let the future tell the truth, and evaluate each one according to his work and accomplishments. The present is theirs; the future, for which I have really worked, is mine.â€
Tesla:“Life is and will ever remain an equation incapable of solution, but it contains certain known factors.â€
"Our virtues and our failings are inseparable, like force and matter. When they separate, man is no more."
On January 7, 1943, Nikola Tesla had died in room 3327 at the New Yorker Hotel, New York City. Hundreds filed into New York City's Cathedral of St. John the Divine for his funeral services, and a flood of messages acknowledged the loss of a great genius. New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia read a eulogy live on New York Radio, written by Louis Adamic. Three Nobel Prize recipients addressed their tribute to "one of the outstanding intellects of the world who paved the way for many of the technological developments of modern times". After Tesla's death the custodian of alien property impounded his trunks, which held his papers, his diplomas and other honours, his letters and his laboratory notes. These were eventually inherited by Tesla's nephew, Sava Kosanovich, and later housed in the Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade.
Calgary Tesla Society organizes its activities through four chapter activities:
We organize and support presentations about Tesla’s work and life and we work to implement information about Tesla into high-school curriculum.
Calgary Tesla Award established to honor Serbian-American scientist and inventor Nikola Tesla (link).
Seeking bold, and innovative ideas/ventures that positively impact humanity and the planet (in the spirit of Nikola Tesla)
Nikola Tesla is an under-recognized inventor who was instrumental to our mainstay system of electricity transfer (alternating current) and made hundreds of significant and groundbreaking inventions in areas of wireless energy, wireless communication, magnetism, radio, x-rays, cosmic rays, radar, robotics, tele-automation and much more.
